This organization has services for children and adults ages 3 to 22. The main volunteering opportunities take place during their after-school program which meets from 2-6 pm M-F, where children and young adults (8-22) participate in a variety of activities. Additionally, one can volunteer in the various weekend recreation and leisure activities that take place Friday nights and Saturdays twice a month. AIDS Healthcare Foundation, established in 1987, is the nation’s largest provider of HIV/AIDS medical care. The Foundation has grown from a small group of friends dedicated to the creation of dignified care for people in the last stage of AIDS to a multi-million dollar agency providing excellence in care for people living at all stages of HIV infection and disease around the world.
Volunteers will have a chance to work closely with professional HIV/AIDS advocates, earn school credit (if applicable), attend special events, and gain work experience in the HIV/AIDS field. We also provide opportunities for our volunteers to attend trainings to become certified HIV Testing Counselors, helping us reach our testing goals and spread the word on the importance of knowing one’s HIV status.

The Society is engaged in patient services, research, education, and fund raising. Volunteer opportunities are available with flexible hours and projects may be open-ended or time-specific. Typically, volunteers work on driving patients to and from cancer treatments/doctor appointments, resource information guidance (RIG) at the ACS office, public education on health issues like tobacco and nutrition (e.g. the Great American Smokeout), assistance with the Feel Better Program, or fund raising for special events like Daffodil Days or Relay for Life.

American Hospital is a 156 bed Chemical Dependency Recovery Hospital (CDRH). The Hospital offers a 6-month residential detoxification program and aftercare treatment modalities. Patients are from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds. Interns work as co-facilitators for individual and group sessions. Interns can earn class credit or can volunteer. The American Red Cross is a non-profit organization that brings together volunteers and staff to help people prevent, prepare for, and cope with emergencies. Chapters provide special services to the community such as safety classes, blood donation drives, youth service programs, and various volunteer services. Internships may be arranged with the local Claremont chapter or the national Washington D.C. chapter. Local volunteers are needed to help with Health Center patients at Pilgrim Place and Claremont Manor; to help with local bloodmobiles, office work, First Aid Stations, Health Fairs and more. Once a year they assist Pomona Valley Hospital and the LA County Health Department with a health fair where blood work and vaccinations are done. Other programs include Community Flu Clinic, First Aid Teams, Claremont Halloween, the Home Alone program, Baby-Sitting Class, and the Disaster Team and Office/Grounds help at the Chapter House. They are currently in need of students with a medical background to work at the first aid stations.

The Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center Care Extender Program was inaugurated in June of 1995 as seeks volunteers who are committed to a four hour shift once a week for a one year period. The Program allows for volunteers to experience health care from a clinical perspective through patient contact and volunteer involvement. Some of the volunteer staff positions available include: executive staff, leadership team, and special programs coordinators. Interested students must attend an orientation session, and a mandatory two-day training program. Recruitment occurs in January, April, July, and October.

The City of Hope is a research hospital, which develops new and innovative cancer treatments. Volunteers are required to work at least 4 hours per week, and should be committed to the position for no less than 6 months. Volunteers are required to purchase a uniform that consists of a shirt totaling $18. Volunteers are not allowed to work weekend or evening hours until their four-week probation period is past (the first four weeks of volunteering). They place students on wings with patients, x-ray, radiation oncology, donor room, gift shop, graphics, immunology, health education, nursing education, medical records, and in central supply. They also require new volunteers to attend an orientation to learn about the disaster plan, air-born contaminants, and specific volunteer positions that are available.

Female volunteers need to be positive, responsible, and caring role models that can open girls’ lives and spend one-on-one time with a troubled teenage girl. A one-year commitment is required. Drivers are also needed (only those with clean DMV records) for a few hours a week to transport our foster children to and from their foster homes and campus, pick-up and deliver donated items, and transport residents to and from community outings and appointments. The vehicle, gas, and insurance are provided. Finally, volunteers with creative skills are needed to teach crafts and sewing to a small group of girls.

Hospice volunteers are remarkable people who give themselves and their time in a variety of ways. Overall, they provide comfort and support to the terminally ill and their loved ones. Specifically, they lend a helping hand by running an errand or making a meal. They brighten a day by telling a story or sending a card. They ease worries by sitting with a loved one while the caregiver takes a much-needed rest. Some volunteers may also provide clerical support by typing, filing and copying and sending cards and thank you notes. No task is too big or too small, but the most important thing is just being there. There are various volunteer positions which fits a wide array of personality types.

Foothill AIDS Project is a community-based organization providing case management and residential care for people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. Their service area includes East San Gabriel Valley, Riverside, San Bernardino and L.A. counties. Through five grant-funded staff members and volunteers, FAP provides education and emotional/physical support to clients and their affected communities. Volunteers are needed for the reception area, to assist in client intake and evaluation of service needs, to assist in writing and production of a newsletter, and patient transport to doctor visits. Foothill Family Shelter is a nonprofit organization founded in 1984 which houses homeless families with children for a period of up to 120 days, free of rent and utility charges. We also provide one-year transitional housing as well as permanent housing. We need volunteers for our Reading Room! The Reading Room implements an incentives based literacy program to help our children. (K-12) practice and improve basic literacy skills using age-appropriate activities, rewards for personal reading goals, and parent participation opportunities.
If you are 18 or older and would like volunteer some time, we have applications available. We are especially looking for men to work with the male students & mentor them as well. We also would welcome any retired teachers. The hours of operation are from 2:30 p – 6p Monday thru Friday. If you can only come a few hours a week, that’s okay. Every little bit helps. We are looking for women to mentor our group of parents and parents-to-be for our Big Steps for Little Feet and Harold Cares programs. The classes are held on Wednesday and Thursday evenings for 10 weeks. Volunteer applicants must be able to commit to attending the classes with one of our clients once a week and maintain a relationship after the baby is born. Our next session begins in January.
Employment Program – we need mentors to implement a four-week employment program one night per week. The curriculum will include resume building, internet job search/applications, phone skills and taped mock interview exercises. Once our clients have completed the first classes and have a job interview scheduled, we would like the mentors to sponsor a client with the image-building portion of the training, including taking the client out and purchasing an interview ensemble and getting their hair & make-up done.

House of Ruth’s mission is to advocate for and assist women victimized by domestic violence and children exposed to violence in transforming their lives by providing culturally competent shelter, programs, opportunities and education; and to contribute to social change through intervention, education, prevention programs and community awareness. Volunteers perform a wide variety of services to support our clients, such as answering our 24-hour hotline; assisting clients in our
Temporary Restraining Clinic; helping in the Shelter’s children’s program; providing childcare or supervising children on outings; providing transportation for Shelter clients; and making community education presentations and advocating for domestic violence victims within the greater community at public events. They welcome volunteers to participate who must participate in a 40 hour comprehensive training that is offered three times a year (typically beginning in March, July and September).

Huntington Hospital has a college student volunteer program to provide students with an opportunity to experience working in a hospital environment, and to provide needed services and assistance to the hospital patients, employees and visitors. Their volunteer program is observation only; however, residents are generally open to answering questions. The hours of the program are from 8am to 11am every week. The program comes highly recommended by previous students and has a more reasonable volunteer hour expectation. The hospital also has the Preceptor Program which is a three month, upper-division pre-med program in which students come in one morning a week (Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday) and spend one hour listening to cases and another 1-2 hours going on rounds with a medical resident, an intern, and medical students. The hospice association assists patients and families who have a terminal diagnosis and a life expectancy of less than 6 months. Volunteers must attend an orientation program that takes place three-four nights a week for three weeks. They conduct three trainings a year, one typically in September. Volunteers serve as companions and caregivers to patients. You may need to administer medications on a case by case basis. Serve as an active listener and emotional support for both patient and family members, and serve to provide respite care for family members. Volunteers are expected to commit to a year and there are two avenues that are available:
Palliative Care – Volunteers are assigned to a family that usually has a chronically ill family member or someone who is coming off a long term illness.
Simple Gifts – Volunteers are paired with a frail or elderly person in the community.

A private non-profit health agency that was established as the Attending Staff Association of the John Wesley County Hospital in 1960 by concerned L.A. County physicians. These staff physicians sought to establish an agency that could obtain additional funds to support and augment patient care, education, and research at the John Wesley facility. The Skid Row Medical Outreach Team seeks out disenfranchised homeless individuals in the Los Angeles downtown area of Central City East commonly known as skid row. This program is one of our many collaborative efforts with Homeless Health Care Los Angeles (HHCLA). Outreach workers walk the streets, alleys and under freeways engaging individuals in conversation, while offering referrals. Community health workers conduct health assessment and referrals at sites throughout the area.

LLUMCH provides supportive professional care for terminally ill patients and their families in their own homes. The program includes visits by specially trained nurses, home health aides, social workers, chaplains and volunteers who provide pain and symptom management and assist families in the development of coping skills.

Planned Parenthood is a private, non-profit agency providing health clinics for maternal, child, and reproductive healthcare. Nine clinics are operated in the L.A. area, with the central office just east of downtown of Los Angeles. There is also an office in Pomona. Interns are needed to assist in Adolescent Self-Esteem and Pregnancy Prevention programs in the L.A. and Pomona school districts. Volunteers are also needed to do office work, assist with middle school and high school health education, and Health Fair Outreach. Volunteers are required to make a one-year commitment to the program. Communication, multi-cultural/bilingual skills are preferred, but not necessary. Pomona Valley Hospital has an extensive volunteer program. Student needs to call and have an application sent to them, or they can apply on their website. Each prospective volunteer attends an orientation session and then is placed in a certain area based on their interests and where Volunteer Services thinks they can best serve the hospital. Certain positions are highly competitive. All Volunteers are required to wear white pants, a white shirt, and to purchase a volunteer shirt for $15-$22. In the past, students have volunteered in emergency, labor and delivery, outpatient clinics, surgical supply, and other areas. Volunteer spaces are limited.

Established in 1924, our volunteer program is an important part of the hospital’s heritage. Volunteers work in a variety of ways to achieve their mission, which is “to render service to the hospital and its patients, and assist the hospital in promoting the health and welfare of the community.”

Tri City Mental Health is a community mental health center providing crisis intervention, day treatment and outpatient mental health services (Spanish and Asian Pacific programs). Clients are all ages and generally have severe disorders. They have several facilities or branches with different opportunities. They are very flexible with several groups of clients that our students could work with, including major depression, drug addiction, schizophrenia, and manic. Volunteers/interns are also needed as aides in socialization, training program, and as receptionists, typists, and graphic artists. The Health Center requires ten hours a week flexible commitment.

VNA provides health care at home for the ill and disabled persons. Services include those of registered nurses; physical, occupational and speech therapists; medical social workers; dietitians and home health aides. Medicare/Medi-Cal certified hospice serves terminally ill patients and their families. Volunteers for the hospice work as field visitors, offering relief and assistance to those using the Association’s services. Training is required, and sessions are usually offered twice a year. However, it is possible to set up a one-on-one intensive training session for those who are interested. There is also no minimum amount of hours that are required.
